Hello everyone I have just started getting into Geology, and have wanted to collect some geodes! Problem is i live in the Chicago area and due to school and work can't get away for a whole weekend to travel to keokuk or else where for other cool formations.

anyone know a good spot in illinois for geodes or other cool rocks nearish (50 miles) of chicago?

This posted question was asked over 5 years ago with no replies and similar postings occur on the site every so often here goes.

Geodes occur in the Keokuk region of SE Iowa, NE Missouri and West central Illinois because the geology is right and the proper bedrock layers with the geodes are to be found at the surface of the lands in this area. In Illinois, the town of Hamilton centers on this area. In this area, collectible geodes can reliably be found if you know exactly where to hunt.   Away from this area of West central Illinois, few if any collectible geodes are reliably found. So, living near Chicago, you should not expect to find any.
Near Chicago, consider hunting fossils or interesting beach pebbles on the shore of Lake Michigan?   BOB
