So, I'll be in Atlanta through the end of the month. Anyone have any tips on good places to go digging on the weekends?

Thanks y'all!

And all this time I thought Ist had all the answers!!??[biggrin]

About the only thing I know of around Atlanta is the black tourmaline in that large piece of pegmatite called Stone Mountain... but I don't think the state of Georgia would like you collecting near the Three Horseman!?

Best at ya!

Guri Z:  Go to the Rock Tumbling Hobby website and look for Jamesp.  James is a great fellow and may be able to help you.  James usually leaves messages in the "Rock Tumbling Photos" section.  James lives just south of Atlanta.  He would be an excellent resourse.

Guri,

Several Georgia rockhounding locations come immediately to mind: 1) Graves Mountain (see http://www.gamineral.org/ft/commercial/ftgravesmain.html); 2) The Hogg Mine (see http://hoggmine.com/) and 3) Summerville Agate (see http://www.gamineral.org/ft/2014/ft201404.html).

My pal Jeff Deere might be able to point you in the right direction since he lives in Cartersville and knows a lot about Georgia collecting.  (see https://rogams.wordpress.com/gem-and-mineral-show/).

You could arrange to go to Graves Mountain, but you'll have to take at least one other person along should you be able to get in. I've never been to the Hogg Mine, so I can't offer any specific advice about it, but Jeff has on more than one occasion.  I've also never been to the Summerville Agate location, but Jeff and Charles Carter with the GMS (see (see http://www.gamineral.org/ft/2014/ft201404.html) have and could probably tell you more about it.

Good luck!

Mike

Hello All,

Traveling to Georgia and South Carolina for two weeks of rock hounding.  Stopping at Hogg mine. Amos Cunningham, Diamond Hill, Prost Farm, and thinking of trying some gold panning.  And suggestions or locations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Daniel

Last I heard Prost Farm was being sold and wasn't open to collecting any longer that was as of about a year ago so this info may be dated now.
