Amy,

Jacob's Geodes is still open, Stevensons, I'm not sure.  Hoppe Geodes is no longer accessible to individuals (as of 2015 Spring).  Clubs can still gain access (at least the LOESS Club did this spring).  I have not heard of Shefflers in MO.

My goal is to visit the other geode mines this year.  Then of course, I've been saying that for the past three years.

Try doing a search on Geodes Hamilton Illinois.  That might give you a few more leads.

Word of advice.  Summer is hot and humid here in the Midwest.  Be sure to bring plenty of fluids, mosquito repellent and sun screen.

Have fun looking!

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Hamilton geode hunting,we had good luck at one of the free areas but the park behind the ball diamond in Warsaw no longer allows it. We made a quick trip to Stevenson's to see if we could get some there and luckily he was outside, we were in a hurry as we had to start heading back home to Michigan. He was very friendly and made us feel welcome, we ended up with alot of nice ones, will be cracking them open for days. We plan to return to the area around August and hope he will still be open to the public, just make sure to call ahead at any of the fee areas so you know that they are allowing hunting and so they know to expect you.

My kids love rock hunting and geodes. Rocks minerals and gems make them super happy. I live in the western Illinois area. Where can I take them for those activities?

AMBER,    For a family with youngsters, I think fee for digging sites in the Keokuk area might be your best bet.    Quarries are closed to collectors, road cuts should be off limits when youngsters are present, and my guess is creeks and lakes might be on the high side as the Midwest is again in a rainy period.

I suggest you read thru this and other related threads on the website to get ideas of the fee for digging sites in your area. Then google each site's website to find out the info.     BOB
