Anyone know any good collecting sites on Long Island, NY?

Thanks for your help!

PATRICIA,    Born in NYC and raised in the Forest Hills section of Queens with much of my family also living on Long Island, I have fond memories of my youth in NY.

As we all know there has been explosive growth on L.I. so whatever collecting sites there might have been,  may be long gone.   However there are still opportunities.  Firstly, I would join a local club. I am sure there is a Long Island rock collecting club and the NYC club is both thriving and active.   The clubs will have up to date info and access into sites in and around L.I., Southern NY, Northern NJ, and Connecticut etc.

I might also join the INTERNATIONAL SAND COLLECTORS SOCIETY. Sand collectors are called ARENOPHILES.     I spent my young summers at the beaches of the Rockaways; there is plenty of sand there and all along the L.I. shores to be collected. Go out to the eastern end of the island and collect near Montauk Pt. Then go to the North Fork and collect near Orient Point on L.I. Sound.     Also on eastern L.I. you might find spots with water tumbled pebbles and cobbles in addition to sand.
If you look to collect rocks and minerals and related stuff with an open mind, you should find some nice stuff.    BOB

Thank you, Bob!  I always collect with the kids when we go on vacation- we always seek out sites (and often drive way out of the way to get to them!!), but I don't know of anything closer to home. I will definitely check into the clubs.  Thanks for the suggestion!
