I highly recommend digging for selenite at the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/oklahoma/saltplains/selenite.html

This site has field trip reports arranged by state. Have a look and see if there is anything else you'd he interested in. The Arkansas quartz mines centered around Mt Ida, Arkansas are prolific. I have been to Mt Fisher for a couple hours, not really enough experience to guide you but there are reports on the field trip pages.

    Good Luck!

I am planning on taking a road trip with my kids in July from PA to southern CA and back. going through arkansas on the way out, not sure about the return trip. My kids had a blast at Herkimer NY hunting "Herkimer diamonds" that last two summers, and I think they have caught the rock hounding bug. Can anyone recommend some places we might be able to go hunting rocks along the way? We are planning a day at crater of diamonds state park, and perhaps the tourmaline mine down in San Diego while we are in Ca.

    Any other suggestions?
    Val
