Hello all, I've been rockhounding for about a year and a half, but mostly my finds have been run off quartz and slag next to lakes.

I'm wondering what's the best resource to look at for collecting in this region, any pointers, or just a club or field trips available to me. I haven't had much luck finding too much; is there a good book to buy for this area?

Cheers and merry Christmas!

Further, I did a few of the "pay by the bucket" tourist trap kinds of deal, but after figuring out my finds and figuring out localities for them I found that almost no mineral or stone I had was local. I just really want to experience finding more than gravel piles.

Donald,

You're best bet would probably be to join a rockhounding club to help get you started as there are at least several collecting opportunities not too far from where you live, including the Diamond Hill Quartz Mine near Antreville, SC, Graves Mountain near Lincolnton, GA and the Savannah River Agate site near Girard, GA.  You can use the map at the bottom of this board to find rockhounding clubs nearest to where you live.  I also suggest that you check on my Advice to New Rockhounds page at http://mcrocks.com/images-2/RockhoundingAdvicePage.html

Good luck!

Mike
