| #1 | Hey everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. Hope y'all are A-OK and enjoying your rockhounding activities.
A while back I asked Herb if I could write an article on his adventures as a rockhound, his Bonseki art, and his efforts to teach folks about rocks, mineral and fossils. He was agreeable and provided me with the info I needed and a photo or two. I wrote the article and submitted it to our club's bulletin for publication. Alas, it was too long so I had to choose just one facet of Herb's life to pay homage to. I chose his Bonseki art as it is not something many here in the US are familiar with and I was absolutely fascinated with his work.
In August I was informed by our club's bulletin editor that my article had placed at the AFMS level, that means it had to have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the SCFMS level to be entered into the AFMS contest. In September our editor presented the awards. I am pleased to say that it placed 3rd at both the SCFMS and AFMS. The judges were just as enamored with Herb's Bonseki art as I was and as I had suspected had never heard of it.
Herb, thanks for letting me show you off to the SCFMS and the AFMS. I truly enjoyed watching you create such lovely scenes with sand and rock! My only regret is that I couldn't tell the whole story. Hmmmm, maybe I will rewrite the rest of the story and submit it too! Ya never know!

| #6 | Denise,
When you asked for information about my Bonseki, I was surprised, and honored. I really had a special time in Texas with y'all searching for rocks and fossils. I'll go ahead and show the article that you sent to me. You really did an interesting and accurate account.

This Saturday I'll be showing the art at a reception at the Keizer (OR) Art Museum for local artists. Last weekend I showed it at Clackamas County Fairgrounds. I posted a memorial for my Sensei there. I wrote earlier about her death. Here's the table where I did my demonstrations.

It resulted in requests to show it at at least 3 more rock shows next year, so I'll be keeping busy. (I also will be doing 2 rock and fossil and 2 Native American culture and legends presentations at nearby schools this month)
I look upon this as a fun gift that I have been given, and it's really fun to show off. I'll always be a teacher.
Thanks for your good words.

| #7 | Herb,
Since you got them hooked on Bonseki it should be simple to ease into Joman culture and all the artifacts you discovered in your research in Japan. I still have those Joman arrow heads in a display case over my PC. I discuss Joman culture with my barber when it's time for a trim. He came over from Japan about 30 years ago when an Air Force guy married his sister and brought her and him over here and taught them to cut hair. He enjoys looking and talking about my rock display in my old pool area.

| #8 | Denise, congratulations on your article and your award. And KOW!
Herb, I wish that I could see some of your work (the real thing). Photos are good, but they will always be second best. You are a real artist. |

| #9 | Hey Joe, how ya been?
Thanks Don, and you are right, pictures only tell half the story.
Herb, you are a great rockhound, teacher, and artist but best of all you are a great friend! You are an inspiration to us all. |

| #10 | Denise,
It's good to hear from you again. We miss all those questions you used to ask. I'm not as spry as I used to be, but who is, since I got my knee replaced. I'm just cautious even walking but it doesn't bother me at all any more. It's like it was always part of me. Even my doctor is in awe. I was back in my crick within a month of the operation. I walked with no aid at all after a week and drove after 2 weeks. It's truly a miracle of Titanium and Plastic.
The doctor says he will always remember me, but nut for my recuperative powers. I woke up as he was putting the devices in my leg and asked if he would like to borrow my "Crack Hammer" to get them in my bones. I warned him ahead of time that the stuff they give you to put regular humans asleep doesn't work to well with me. He heeded my warning though and had the anesthesia doc holding me and had me tied down to boot. Of course with the spinal juice I couldn't feel anything from the waist down for hours. The doctor thought it was so funny that he gave me the best room in the hospital and saw me walking the stairs the next day so he sent me home the day after. My 3 brothers always said I was left on the porch in an egg form and wasn't born like the rest of them and wasn't human. This after they found out I don't bleed more then a few drops, no matter how deep the cut. Being the "Baby" I had to be tough to survive.
How are things in Texas?

| #11 | Wow, Joe, I would absolutely freak out if I had woke up! Glad to hear your new knee is working well, your creek would miss you if you wasn't able to visit.
Texas saw a drought this summer and now we are making up for it. The weather is absolutely gorgeous at the moment with 50s at night and mid to upper 70s during the days (it was 80 today). I cleaned out my rock gardens this afternoon got all the pine needles and twigs from summer out. Now they are looking good.
Our daughter and granddaughters are coming next week for a 3 or 4 week visit. Yipee! And our club show is next weekend. So going to be busy. |

| #14 | Denise:
Just showed rocks to 4 classes of third graders Friday including fulgurites I found in the Lost Forest area near Fort Rock. The words "fulgurite" and "Denise" are forever linked together in my mind.
You've come a long way.
Fun, ain't it!!

| #15 | Denise,
Even I picked up a thing or two from our old discussions years ago. I'm still searching for knowledge and when I stop I guess it will be from Petrification of my brain. I still remember where every rock I ever collected came from but have to search the memory banks for a while to say what they are.
I still dabble with PCs and have a problem right now with my own PC. I thought my old monitor was going bad and replaced it with one of those new fangled flat wide screen LCD models from ViewSonic. I don't have any reds on the screen and it's not the cable or the connection pins to the Motherboard. I ordered a new video board to place in my PC and that should fix the problem. The makers used to have cards for everything but added everything to the Motherboard about 10 years ago and now when things go bad you have to either buy a new Motherboard or a new PC to fix things. Not many people will delve into the insides of any electronic machine these days but I still do. Even adding a board to a Motherboard is tricky since the new parts are not interchangeable, due to voltage and design changes that are leaping forward daily. The processors are not jumping through huge generation changes anymore but everything else is, mostly through miniaturization and material upgrades.
Rocks are simple in comparison to computer technology, but both are still fun to figure out. Granddaughters are fun too, we have 4 so far and only one grandson.
